What belongs here

The journal treats data at scale both as a subject of research and as an instrument of it. Work belongs here when it advances how such data is represented, processed, analyzed, governed, or understood — whether the contribution is theoretical, methodological, systems-level, or applied within a field.

Two things are read together: the data the work operates on, and its substantive contribution to big-data research. Contributions include theoretical understanding, methods, systems, observational and empirical findings, replication, validation, and synthesis.

Scale, dimensionality, rate of arrival, heterogeneity, linkage, and constraints on data use can each motivate that research. The Aims and Scope page sets out the seven contribution families, the evidence each carries, and how to judge whether a manuscript fits.

Seven families carry the scope

Machine learning and statistical modeling, from language models to causal and predictive inference.

Datasets, benchmarks and evaluation protocols, record linkage, cleaning, provenance and data quality.

Interfaces for analysis

Visualization, visual analytics, dashboards and decision support — how an analyst reaches data and acts on it.

Governance, privacy and responsible use

Privacy-preserving computation, disclosure control, security, fairness, and the frameworks that govern data use.

Applied research within a field

Data-intensive methods carried into health, genomics, finance, energy, environment, transport, security and more.
