What the journal is looking for
Work belongs here when it makes a substantive contribution to big-data research — when it advances how data at scale is represented, processed, analyzed, governed, or understood. Two things are read together: the data the work operates on, and what the work contributes.
Contributions of many kinds are welcome. A theoretical result, a new method, a systems design, a data resource, an interface, a governance or legal analysis, an observational or empirical finding, a replication, a validation study and a synthesis are all within the remit. Applied work may contribute knowledge within a field using established methods.
What differs between them is the evidence each carries, not whether they are eligible. The Aims and Scope page states the seven contribution families and the evidence the journal looks for in each.

- Learning and statistical methods, including language models and causal inference
- Systems, infrastructure and data management
- Data resources, benchmarks, quality and reproducibility
- Interfaces for analysis, visualization and decision support

- Applied research within a field, from health and genomics to energy and transport

Regular submissions
This page is a standing invitation. Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year and are published in the open issue as they are accepted, so authors may submit whenever the work is ready.
Special issues
A collection on Big Data on Medical Treatment and Clinical Medicine is open for submissions. The special issues page carries the call, its guest editor and how a manuscript reaches it.
Proposing a collection
Researchers with relevant expertise are invited to propose a focused collection on a question the field needs gathered in one place. The special issues page sets out what a proposal contains.
Checking whether your work fits
The Aims and Scope page sets out the contribution families and the evidence each carries, which is what an editor reads a manuscript against. Where a question remains, send a short summary of the work to the editorial office and it will advise on fit before you prepare a full manuscript.

- Prepared as the Instructions for Authors set out, with the declarations that apply to your study.
- Your statement of fit
- One or two sentences on what the work operates on and what it contributes. It helps an editor place the manuscript quickly.
- Costs
- Nothing is charged at submission or during review. The article processing charge falls due only after acceptance.
What happens next
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Authors receive the reviewers' comments with the decision.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal, and remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial roles.
