Editorial policies
These policies govern editorial assessment, peer review and the responsible publication of research involving human anatomy, donor material, clinical images and anatomy education.
Editorial independence
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scholarly merit, methodological rigor and research integrity. Fees, services, membership, invitations and editorial or reviewer roles do not influence whether a manuscript is reviewed or accepted.
Peer review and responsibility
Editors assess scope, completeness, ethical documentation, originality and conflicts before external review. A manuscript may be declined without review when a threshold is not met.
Reviewer identities are not disclosed to authors. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally assessed by at least two independent specialists with relevant expertise.
Authors, reviewers and editors must disclose financial, institutional, collaborative and personal interests. Editors and reviewers must decline or recuse when impartial assessment is not possible.
Submitted material is confidential. Reviewers and editors must not share, reuse or upload manuscript content to an external generative-AI service.
Human material, consent and images
- Ethics review
- State the approving body, decision or reference number, jurisdiction and any exemption for research involving living participants or identifiable clinical information.
- Cadaveric and donor material
- Document provenance, the body-donation or legal procurement framework, institutional oversight, consent arrangements and respectful, anonymized use.
- Patient consent and privacy
- Obtain consent for publication when a person could be identified from text, images or unusual combinations of clinical information.
- Image integrity
- Permitted processing must be applied consistently and described. Images must not be altered in a way that creates, removes or misrepresents anatomical evidence.

Material errors may be corrected through a linked notice. Retractions and expressions of concern preserve the scholarly record and state the reason without removing the original record from view.
An appeal must identify a specific error in process or evidence. It is considered by an editor who was not responsible for the disputed decision where practicable.
Authors retain copyright. Published articles use the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license; third-party material requires compatible permission and attribution.
The journal follows recognized publication-ethics guidance, including COPE core practices where applicable. This wording does not claim organizational membership. The approved withdrawal policy is stated on the APC page.

Authors should include ethics, consent, funding, conflict, contribution and data statements at initial submission.
Digital preservation
This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organisation behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish. Read our preservation policy.
