Instructions for authors

Use this guide to prepare a manuscript whose anatomical question, material, measurements, images, ethics and reporting can be assessed without avoidable clarification.

Current article types and limits

Article typeMain textAbstractFigures and tablesReferences
Original Research3,000–6,000 wordsStructured; up to 300 wordsUp to 10 combinedUp to 50
Review Article4,000–8,000 wordsStructured; up to 300 wordsUp to 12 combinedUp to 100
Case Report1,500–3,000 wordsUnstructured; up to 200 wordsUp to 6 combinedUp to 25
Technical Note1,000–2,000 wordsUnstructured; up to 150 wordsUp to 4 combinedUp to 15

Anatomy-education studies normally use Original Research. A validated teaching, dissection, preservation, imaging or measurement method may use Technical Note. Older archive records may retain historical labels such as Short Communication; that label is not a current submission category.

Manuscript order

Front matterTitle page

Specific title; all author names and affiliations; corresponding-author details; ORCID iDs where available; author contributions; funding and competing-interest declarations.

SummaryAbstract and keywords

State the anatomical question, material or population, methods, principal findings and conclusion. Provide three to six precise keywords for structure, region, modality and study design.

EvidenceMain text

Use a structure appropriate to the article type. Original research normally separates introduction, methods, results, discussion, limitations and conclusion.

RecordEnd matter

Include data and materials availability, acknowledgements, funding, conflicts, contributions, ethics and consent statements, references and supplementary-file descriptions.

Files, figures, tables and references

Manuscript file
Submit DOC or DOCX, double-spaced in 12-point type, with continuous line numbers, one-inch margins and figures supplied separately rather than embedded in the manuscript.
Figures
Supply TIFF, JPEG or PNG files at a minimum of 300 dpi. Cite figures in order and provide a legend, orientation, scale and permissions where required.
Tables
Provide editable tables, cite them in order and use concise titles and explanatory footnotes. Do not submit tables as images.
Supplementary material
Label and cite each file in the main text, describe its contents and use a commonly readable format.
References
Use Vancouver style, numbered in order of first citation. Verify author names, article title, journal, year, volume, pages and DOI where available.
Statistical reporting
Describe the analysis plan, software and version, assumptions, effect estimates and uncertainty. Report exact sample sizes and explain missing observations.

Anatomy-specific reporting

Terminology and orientation
Use Terminologia Anatomica consistently. Define landmarks, planes, sides, levels, variants and abbreviations.
Specimens and provenance
Report source, number, demographic information where lawful, inclusion criteria, preservation, dissection, condition and body-donation or procurement framework.
Measurements and imaging
Define instruments, calibration, observer training, repeatability, slice or acquisition parameters, reconstruction steps and statistical methods.
Education studies
Identify learners, setting, intervention, comparator, outcomes, instrument validity and consent or ethics determination.
Figures and image integrity
Define scale and orientation, label structures legibly, disclose processing and preserve the evidentiary relationship among image panels. Do not add, remove, move or selectively obscure anatomical features.
Reporting guideline
Use the study-design guideline from the EQUATOR Network where one applies and submit the completed checklist when requested.

Ethics, consent and transparency

Living participantsName the ethics body, approval or exemption and reference number; describe consent.
Cadaveric materialDocument provenance, donor or legal consent framework, oversight, respectful use, anonymization and permission for publication of identifiable images.
Clinical trialsRegister in a public registry at or before first participant consent for enrollment, and report the registry name, identifier and registration date.
AuthorshipList only qualifying authors and state each contribution; resolve authorship before submission.
Data and materialsEvery empirical manuscript must provide an access statement or explain privacy, consent, legal or ethical restrictions.
AI-assisted toolsDisclose material use; authors remain accountable. Do not name an AI tool as an author.

Revision, proofs and the published record

A revision should include a clean manuscript, a marked version when requested and a point-by-point response that identifies every change. At proof stage, correct production errors and minor factual errors; do not add unreviewed results. Material post-publication errors should be reported promptly for assessment under the correction or retraction policy.

Authors retain copyright, and accepted articles are published under CC BY 4.0. Publication is conditional on editorial acceptance and completion of production requirements.

Complete before submission

Confirm the article type and limits; manuscript order; editable tables; separate 300 dpi figures; Vancouver references; ethics, consent and trial registration where applicable; data availability; funding, conflicts and contributions; permissions; and the APC terms. The Submit Paper page lists the three supported routes—use only one.
