Membership
An optional, annual arrangement through which researchers and clinicians support the journal’s open-access publishing. It is separate from submitting, reviewing and editing, and it sits outside the editorial process.
What membership supports
The journal charges readers nothing. Publishing an accepted article is funded by the article processing charge, and membership contributes to the same work: editorial administration, production, DOI registration and permanent open-access hosting.
Members receive journal communications, including issue alerts and notice of calls for papers, at the same time as they are published.
Where membership has no part
The editorial process. A member’s manuscript is screened, reviewed and decided exactly as any other, by the handling editor and independent reviewers, on the criteria published in the Editorial Policies.
Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own work. The same editorial procedures and appointment criteria apply to members and other contributors.
Why the separation matters
So a reader can trust that what is published was judged, not bought.
A journal’s value to its field rests on the decisions behind what it publishes being made on the science. The journal therefore keeps membership, payment and editorial judgment structurally apart: the editorial office administers membership, and the handling editor sees a manuscript without reference to it.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
Appointments to the editorial board and invitations to guest edit follow the journal’s own assessment of subject expertise, review record and availability, described on the For Editors page. Membership is not a route to either.
Current categories and terms
So nobody pays against a figure that has moved.
Membership categories, the annual fee for each, the term it runs for, what it includes, and any fee relief that applies to an article processing charge are confirmed by the editorial office before any payment is taken.
Write to info@openaccesspub.org with “Membership terms” in the subject line, and the office will send the current categories, fees and terms in writing before you commit to anything.
Applying
So an applicant knows what is asked and who decides.
Applications are welcome from people actively engaged in nephrology research, clinical care, dialysis services, transplantation or a related field of kidney medicine, at any career stage. An application is assessed by the journal, and an application is an application: it is not automatic membership.
An application gives:
- your name, current position and institution
- your professional or academic qualification
- a short statement of your research or clinical interests in kidney medicine
- your agreement to the journal’s publication-ethics standards
