What the journal is looking for

A standing invitation across the remit, not a themed campaign.

The journal is organized around the range of kidney research rather than around one preferred kind of evidence, so the invitation is correspondingly wide. Work is welcome at every scale at which nephrology is studied:

• renal biology and disease mechanisms, including laboratory, experimental and computational studies
• clinical nephrology across the life course, from acute kidney injury to chronic kidney disease, glomerular disease, hypertension and cardiorenal medicine
• dialysis, vascular access, transplantation and the conservative and supportive care around them
• diagnosis, measurement and methods — function measurement, biomarkers, pathology, imaging, trial design, evidence synthesis and statistical work
• populations, outcomes and the services through which kidney care reaches people

Contributions include fundamental and applied research, descriptive and observational studies, replication and validation studies, and evidence synthesis. A study of podocyte biology, a validation study for a measurement method, a trial of a therapy and a cohort study of kidney outcomes can each be within scope.

Scope eligibility rests on the substantive nephrology question; methodological rigor and reporting quality are assessed separately. The remit, its boundary and the formats the journal publishes are set out on the Aims and Scope page.

What happens to a submission

So the process is clear before the work is sent.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships and roles, and the article processing charge arises only after acceptance.

Complete the guideline for your study design — CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA, CARE, STARD or ARRIVE — and attach it.

Declarations

Ethics approval and consent, trial registration, funding, competing interests, author contributions and any AI use.

Data availability

Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement.
