Six services, each with its own job
Several distinct services sit behind the word indexing, and each does a different job. An ISSN names the journal. DOI registration gives every article a permanent identifier and a durable link. Metadata harvesting distributes the article record to aggregators and library systems. Discovery services surface articles in scholarly search. Selective indexing is admission to a curated database after evaluation. Preservation keeps the scholarly record available for the long term.
