Aims & Scope

The Journal of Agronomy Research publishes field-relevant research on crops, soils and agricultural production systems, supported by transparent methods and agronomically meaningful outcomes.

This page is for authors deciding whether a research question, study setting and claimed outcome belong in JAR.

The scientific centre

JAR evaluates whether a study connects a consequential agronomic question to evidence appropriate for the setting and to an outcome that matters for crop, soil or production-system understanding.

Core research domains

The journal’s scope is deliberately bounded. Each domain must be connected to agronomic performance, management or understanding rather than treated as a free-standing topic.

Crop production and management

Establishment, agronomic practices, cultivar performance, yield formation, quality or harvest outcomes evaluated in a production context.

BoundaryCrop description alone is not sufficient.

Soil fertility, health and plant nutrition

Nutrient management, soil physical and biological function, amendments, rhizosphere processes and diagnostic approaches linked to crop or system performance.

BoundaryGeneral soil characterisation needs a production link.

Crop protection and plant pathology

Weed, pest and disease ecology or management where effects on a crop and the agronomic implications are directly evaluated.

BoundaryPathogen biology without crop relevance is peripheral.

Breeding, genetics and stress physiology

Germplasm, traits, genetic variation or physiological responses that lead to a field-relevant crop phenotype, management insight or production outcome.

BoundaryMechanism-only studies require an explicit agronomic bridge.

Cropping systems, rotations and agroecology

Interactions among crops, management, soils and landscapes, including rotations and diversified systems assessed through defensible agronomic outcomes.

Water management, crop response, scheduling and resource-use studies with measured implications for crop or production-system performance.

Research settings and evidence

Study setting does not determine quality by itself. Suitability depends on whether the evidence can support the agronomic question and whether the conclusions stay within the environments actually studied.

What a strong fit shows

Scope fit is more than a topic match. A suitable manuscript normally makes its agronomic reasoning visible at three levels.

Question and context

  • A defined agronomic research question
  • The crop, cultivar or germplasm identified
  • Relevant site, soil, season and management context

Design and evidence

  • An explicit experimental unit
  • Appropriate treatments, controls or comparators
  • Replication, randomisation or local control where required
  • Measurements and analysis matched to the design

Interpretation and outcome

  • A measurable crop, soil or system result
  • Effect estimates and uncertainty where appropriate
  • Conclusions limited to the evidence and settings sampled

These are scope-level expectations, not a reporting checklist. Consult the Instructions for Authors for preparation and reporting requirements.

Where the boundary sits

The distinction is the agronomic question and outcome—not whether a study uses a fashionable method, a particular technology or a field location.

In scope when

  • The study directly concerns a crop, soil or agricultural production system.
  • The methods are appropriate to the agronomic question.
  • Controlled or enabling research leads to a defensible production-relevant outcome.
  • Claims remain proportionate to the sites, seasons, material and conditions studied.

Outside scope when

  • Clinical, medical or veterinary work has no agronomic question.
  • Food processing or nutrition is unrelated to crop production.
  • Molecular, cellular or environmental work lacks crop, soil or system relevance.
  • Engineering or computation presents a method without an agronomic outcome.
  • Economics, policy, supply chains or technology adoption are detached from measured production evidence.
  • The manuscript is primarily commercial product promotion.

Topically relevant is not automatically ready for assessment

A manuscript may concern an in-scope subject yet remain unsuitable when it lacks a defensible research question, adequate methods or measurable outcomes capable of supporting its conclusions.

Interdisciplinary and borderline work

JAR welcomes methods and perspectives from adjacent fields when they serve a specific agronomic decision. These examples show the link expected.

Molecular or genetic research

Fits whenA marker, pathway or trait is connected to crop performance, stress response, management or a production phenotype.

Does not fit whenThe work stops at mechanism or sequence description without an agronomic bridge.

Remote sensing, modelling or AI

Fits whenThe approach is validated with agronomic observations and informs a crop, soil or management outcome.

Does not fit whenThe central result is only algorithmic novelty, generic prediction or technical accuracy.

Engineering or energy

Fits whenA device, process or resource intervention is tested under realistic agricultural conditions and changes a measured system result.

Does not fit whenThe work is a prototype description, renewable-energy analysis or efficiency study without an agronomic outcome.

Economics, policy or adoption

Fits whenThe analysis addresses a defined management question and is integrated with measured crop, soil or production evidence.

Does not fit whenIt is a stand-alone market, policy, perception, blockchain or supply-chain study.

Climate or environmental research

Fits whenThe study tests adaptation, resilience or environmental response through measurable agricultural-system performance.

Does not fit whenThe crop, soil-management or production-system consequence is absent or merely speculative.

Check your manuscript’s fit

Use these questions in order. Scope fit supports editorial assessment but does not guarantee peer review or acceptance.

Does the study concern a crop, soil or agricultural production system?

If not, the manuscript is outside JAR’s scientific centre.

Is the agronomic outcome direct, measurable and central to the conclusions?

An indirect or speculative link needs clarification before submission.

Are the design, evidence and setting adequate for the claim?

Methods and interpretation must match the environments and material studied.

Clearly in scope

All three answers are yes, and the manuscript’s main contribution is agronomic.

Potentially in scope

The topic is relevant, but the agronomic link or study setting needs a concise explanation.

Outside scope

The work lacks a direct crop, soil or production-system question and measurable outcome.

Still uncertain

Send the editorial office a title, abstract and brief explanation of the agronomic contribution before submission.
